You both know that you are ready. You’d like to have a traditional engagement, ring and all. It may be two also. One for him and the other for her. Just think of it. Think about how there are many people with bad metal allergies, people who have a strong style, people working but their job limits them to certain choices of jewelry or sometimes they are not allowed to wear jewelry while working. 

Make sure to set a budget for the ring you’re buying.  Get your partner involved so that the budget is realistic. Amounts of money invested in a ring can make or break the bank in the beginning of the marriage, also costs of the wedding can leave you penniless. Good planning is more important than making a show, and unless you are very wealthy, most  partners choosing to begin a life together would rather see a balance achieved between sentiment and spendthrift enthusiasm.   

You should always be clear about your financial limits, needs and goals in shopping for diamonds, whether you’re talking to a shopping mall counter person or a professional jewelry designer. You need to give a professional all the required information or he will be unable to help you. Unless you’ve done research online and at a library, plan to spend several hours comparing rings and stones at any given store.

Also, remember to describe your preferences to the jeweler, engagement rings don’t have to be a standard solitaire. For privately designed setting, or with a stone from the family your guide should know about all that well.  

For many it is financially wise and a matter of taste to purchase outside the realm of diamonds and gold. If the glitter of diamonds does not tickle your partner’s fancy, then you should find another stone that your partner will adore.  One option is high quality jade which has a strong and durable sheen similar to that of diamonds. Maybe a sapphire would be appealing. The traditional diamonds can be beautiful to look at and wear and may be your first and favorite choice but you both are not happy with the costs associated with such. There is currently a stock of very good substitute diamonds available at good prices some look better then the real thing.

To begin buying an engagement ring then you must consider all these things before you go into a jeweler and shop. You are entering in to a maze of different possibilities before you have considered all options fully. The most important thing to know when buying the ring is what you are looking for and what would make you happy.
