Panties went through more changes from a long time when there was nothing there. These undergarments were initially introduced from the East. These undergarments were depicted as pieces of cloth, much like pants, tied around the waist but crotchless. These ancestors of panties were either tied at the ankles or fitted. Women used these predecessors of panties for the sake of modesty since gowns were now higher than before, revealing the wearer’s ankles and calves.

Panties – The Shorter Bloomers

Time came when clothes or skirts grew shorter and so did the undergarments. The bloomers, what panties were called before, were so called because of Amelia Bloomer who made these undergarments popular around the 1850′s. Changes were made to the first move towards modesty, instead of the crotchless pants that protected the legs from prying eyes, the bloomers were similar to men’s pants which covered the women’s intimate areas from the just below the navel down to the middle of the thighs. The present form of panties is now in place but not as streamlined as now.

Eventually, form and function interfered with the bloomers and panties came to life. With higher leg cuts and more form fitting than ever before. These women’s panties can now be worn over form fitting skirts which were the rage all over the country. Compared to the bulky bloomers, the new panties were beautifully cut and afforded the ladies much movement and freedom.

The Modern Panties

The modern underwear soon evolved to what they are now, with higher leg room and lower on the abdomen. Many women actually prefer panties which are almost none existent compared to what are now called granny underwear. Some intimate wear were actually designed to accommodate women who did not wish to have a visible panty line, enter the thongs. Thong panties practically sit on the lowest part of the hips with a thin scrap of fabric fitting between both butt cheeks to present the world with no visible panty lines. These underwear are also called T-backs due to the view from the back.

Panties are now tailor-made and made not only for formal and informal but also to attract the sense of females and males. Many intimate wear of this nature are now made to be seen and to imply a sense of sexiness compared to what they used to be before. snug and utilitarian panties are worn daily but so are attractive and sexy ones.
