Hair Loss in Women: A Devastating Experience

Author: Fernanda B.Sc, Pharm, M.H

A year ago I went through a terrifying, emotionally destructive experience where I noticed I was beginning to lose my hair. To some this might sound and trite, but any women who has gone through a large degree of hair loss empathises with the grieving.

I’ve always had deep dark brown colored thick curly hair with a vast amount of body – too much body.  Hair Stylists always spoke highly about my hair. Secretly I wanted the hair I didn’t have which is silky long blond hair. However, when I looked down and saw my hair on the floor, instead of being attached to my head, I absolutely appreciated what I was losing.  At the time, anywhere I went, I left a trail of hair in my path. When I shampooed my hair large amounts of hair would drop out. When I brushed my hair, after a few strokes, the brush would literally disappear in all the hair burying it. I felt so helpless that I weeped continuously. When I pulled my hair up in an elastic and its thickness was definitely not what it used to be I then figured out I had to do something drastic.

My first step was to talk with my family Doctor There are a lot of medical conditions that bring on hair loss such as Cushings, hypothyroidism, diabetes and polycystic ovaries, etc. I underwent a variety of tests and they all were returned negative.  Although I was happy to know I was in perfect health, it did nothing to settle my fright about the hair loss.  Now I was convinced I had been cruelly blessed with the curse of baldness that runs rampant my Dad’s family.  This propelled me into a painful depression.

My next move was to search the internet looking for information.  The internet was filled with all sorts of miracle advice for hair loss and baldness. I was frightened at how compelled I was to try something, anything, that would stop this hair loss. Particularly spectacular were all of those hair transplant clinics offering a permanent head of hair. But none of these ads gave an explanation.  Why was my hair falling out so dramatically?

I did find a appropriate solution. Via the internet I became aware of a medical clinic with a dermatologist who specializes in hair conditions. I phoned the clinic and was notified I had to have a referral from my physician with test results to deny other medical maladies. Once I met with my physician and the results of the tests were forwarded we made an appointment. I saw the specialist and he did a thorough check of my scalp and my medical history. After discussing my medical history with me for 30 minutes he knew the reason for my dramatic hair loss. I don’t remember his name but he will always be “GOLDENDOC”

Previously that year I had had pneumonia which was very stressful to my body.  Mother Nature being what she is, determined my body needed all the nourishment available and nourishing my hair was not her priority.  “GOLDENDOC” in his defined wisdom advised me that the forfeiture of my lovely locks of hair would be short-lived. True to his word my hair stopped falling out after a further five or six weeks.

Then I stepped through the opposite experience. No hair fallout at all, not even the accepted loss of 100-200 hairs per day.  This was the norm for six months or so.  Now I enjoy having all my hair back, and I sure value it.

If any lady is experiencing hair loss, please experiment with what I did. See your family doctor and get the required tests done to rule out underlying medical problems.  If these results are negative, find a dermatologist who deals with for work with hair loss.  He/she will give information and options that allow you to make a better choice.  Look for my next blog Hair loss in women; Sensible Information.
