The first thing to think about is how you intend to use the table linens. Think about how frequently they will be used and for what sort of occasions. To figure out the right size tablecloth to purchase look at the size of the table and the drop length. It is normal for a tablecloth to hang between six to eight inches on both of the table sides. Longer drop lengths are nice for formal dining but not very practical for family meals.

There are standard shapes and sizes of table linens. When shopping for a rectangular table the tablecloth size you are looking for should include the table length and the length of drop on each end. The width can be determined using the same formula. If you find that your desired size is in between standard sizes go with the larger one. The table linens you select should match your homes décor as well as the tone of the occasion where they will be used.

Most of the time you will see ivory or white table linens at formal occasions. Table linens with designs tend to be the least formal and should be used with tableware which is of a solid color. Cloth napkins should mirror the fabric and color of the tablecloth you choose for your formal occasions. Less formal events call for napkins which blend in well with the tablecloth but are not an exact match.
