When the going gets rough, the rough get playful.  I guess that sort of turns a cliche on its head, doesn’t it?  Face it, we’re in a recession, and everyone is feeling at least a little pinched.  However, people still have birthdays; the year is still filled with those never-ending greeting card holidays, so can you really just forget about some of our most enjoyable cultural rituals?

When it comes to gift giving, I propose that the time has come to change some of our approaches to what constitutes a good gift.  It’s always been true, but now the economic conditions give us an extra reason to remember that the cost of a gift isn’t what really matters.  Presenting a beloved relative or a cherished friend sends the message that you care about them and remember them during important occasions..  That’s all our message of a gift means, and that it all that needs to be said in the act of giving.

So you don’t have to give up fun when things get tough.  In fact, you can turn tough times into fun times with a little thought, frugality and {Italian charms}.

Things had not been going well for me recently. It was nothing serious, it’s just that I had some stress in my life. I hadn’t been resting at all well. On this particular night, I couldn’t seem to get to sleep. Each time I closed my eyes, a million things came into my mind. I finally decided to just get out of bed, move to the den and watch TV for a while. I fell asleep on the sofa and must have slept very soundly. When I awoke, it was 7:30–an hour past my usual wake-up time. I could vaguely hear my clock radio upstairs in my bedroom. I had to prepare myself for work and fast!

I pulled myself off the couch, took a quick shower, tossed on the clothes that I had put out the night before, grabbed what I needed and raced out the door. Unfortunately, the night before I had to park my car almost a full block way. I took a quick look at my watch to see that I was only going to be about thirty minutes late. I had managed to make up for some of my missing time already. I felt a little relieved until…I got to my car and realized that I didn’t have my keys. I now remembered that those keys were now resting comfortably inside my locked townhouse. You guessed it. My house key was safely on that same keychain! I was not a happy camper.

I scanned the area, trying to find something heavy to smash my window. Yes, I was a little desparate and not processing my situation very clearly. Happily, my neighbor pulled into his parking pad next door. I must have startled him when I too loudly called out his name, because I saw some of his coffee slop out as he moved to close his door while trying to balance a cup, his keys, a newspaper and a breakfast sandwich. I explained my situation and asked his advice. I’m sure you know what happened next–he drove me to work practically on time and insisted that I eat his sandwich. While I usually try to avoid high-fat, fast food, who am I to turn down breakfast, especially after my start to the day. (It was delicious–high fat and all!)
