Have you ever wanted to buy a present for a male simply as a thank you?

Things had not been going well for me recently. It was nothing serious, it’s just that I had some stress in my life. I hadn’t been resting at all well. On this particular night, I couldn’t seem to get to sleep. Each time I closed my eyes, a million things came into my mind. I finally decided to just get out of bed, move to the den and watch TV for a while. I fell asleep on the sofa and must have slept very soundly. When I awoke, it was 7:30–an hour past my usual wake-up time. I could vaguely hear my clock radio upstairs in my bedroom. I had to prepare myself for work and fast!

I pulled myself off the couch, took a quick shower, tossed on the clothes that I had put out the night before, grabbed what I needed and raced out the door. Unfortunately, the night before I had to park my car almost a full block way. I took a quick look at my watch to see that I was only going to be about thirty minutes late. I had managed to make up for some of my missing time already. I felt a little relieved until…I got to my car and realized that I didn’t have my keys. I now remembered that those keys were now resting comfortably inside my locked townhouse. You guessed it. My house key was safely on that same keychain! I was not a happy camper.

My neighbor was just coming home from his night-shift job, parking in an open space across the street. As he got out of his car, with a fast-food paper bag containing his breakfast and a cup of coffee in his hand, I almost tackled him as I went across to tell him my problem. I’m sure he pitied me because he immediately helped me into the passenger side of his vehicle, exited his prime parking space and went on to drive me to my job. Not only did he deliver me to my destination on time, but he insisted I eat the breakfast sandwich he had purchased, assuring me that he could stop by the fast food place again for another one on his return back home.

Thanks to this wonderful acquaintance, I was able to arrive at work on time and make my presentation without my stomach growling. I wanted to give my neighbor something as a token of my appreciation and settled on a key chain. Not just ANY key chain, mind you, but an Italian Charm Keychain.

Italian charms are interchangeable links that can be arranged in any order and come in a huge variety of choices: sports team charms, NASCAR charms, and patriotic charms to name a few. These attractive links are stylish for both females AND males. I chose a Italian charm key chain with links representing a couple of his favorite sports teams, because he is a big fan of Boston area teams. He couldn’t have been happier with it! Giving my neighbor an Italian charm key chain was a great thank-you gift for such a thoughtful man.

Incidentally, my “Knight in Shining Armor” also picked me up at the end of my work day and arranged for a locksmith to meet me at my home upon our arrival. Guess what the first key was that my neighbor placed on his new Italian charm key chain I gave him…..a duplicate key to my front door.

Everyone has a story about their mother. Mothers are as different as their unique personalities. Some are patient and kind. Some are loud and obnoxious. Others are very opinionated. In spite of these characteristic differences in a mother’s personality, they do the best that they can, as there is no wrong way to love their child.

Let me first point out that being a mother is the most challenging, yet rewarding, experience in a woman’s life. Women have the ability to love their child unconditionally, in spite of the circumstances. It is said that a Mother’s Love begins at the very thought of conception and never ends; not even after death.

This year I wanted to mark my mother’s 80th birthday with something special. It didn’t need to be expensive; I simply wanted somethat that would reflect upon her life and our relationship. I eventually chose to put together an Italian charm bracelet that would reflect each of the stages of her life, especially her role of a mother.

For the mother who just gave birth to a red-faced, wrinkly skinned, squalling infant with no hair, no teeth, and no idea of who this woman is, her first comment is “Isn’t my baby the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen in your life?!” A new mother’s love is blind.

The mother of an obstinate two-year-old, whose boundaries are constantly being tested, patiently teaches the right way to behave. She allows her child to experience anger and frustration, but ignores tantrums, choosing instead to reward good behavior. This mother’s love is patient, for she understands this stage in her child’s life is short-lived.

The mother of the kindergartener learns to “let go” and allows her child to explore new experiences, meet new challenges, and discover ways to socialize with their peers. As the youngster grows into adolescence, the mother’s role changes with each stage; supporting, encouraging, and challenging the child to become independent. This mother’s love is constant.

The mother of the teen-ager experiences a love which is forgiving. Adolescents often test their boundaries; challenge the rules; bend the truth. Even though they are trying to be independent, they lack the maturity to do so. Often, mistakes are made. All a mother can do is encourage the child to learn from their mistakes; to take responsibility for their actions; to face the consequences. By doing so, she is enabling the child to grow into a self-reliant adult.

The love a mother has for her adult child is full of pride, for she has the satisfaction of a job well done in raising her child. Her efforts have been successful. Her love has overcome all of the obstacles and stages in life. This love is reciprocated because the adult child realizes and appreciates the love their mother has shown them throughout their life.

There is a special bond formed by mother and child once the child becomes a parent. The mother’s ever-changing role is now defined as “Grandmother”. This woman’s love has come full circle now because she understands the challenges her child will face in raising a child. She knows the rewards her child will receive. She appreciates the lessons in love that her grandchild will learn. For, there is no stronger love than that of a mother; and no love more rewarding than becoming a grandmother!

Let’s all celebrate mothers and all the things they are!
