Easy Dorm Room Decorating Tips

Typically, dorm rooms are very small box-shaped rooms with white walls. Not many people would choose to live in that type of room for eight months. Most colleges will not allow you to do any major redecorating, but there are plenty of unique ways you can make your dorm room your own.

Personalize the Dorm Room
Most colleges don’t allow nails to be driven into their dorm room walls, but this doesn’t have to stop you from hanging photographs on the walls. Use sticky adhesive to hang your wall decorations. Just be sure to find the variety that’s meant to hold heavier objects, such as framed photos and pieces of art. You might also make a photo collage on a piece of cardboard or poster board and hang that on the wall as well.

You can also display picture frames on your wooden desk and other shelving areas to personalize the room as well. Displaying pictures of your own in your dorm room will not only lend some style to the room, but it can also help you get through those times when you are homesick and need reminders of home.

Add Color and Style with the Bedding
You can easily add some color and style to your dorm room with the bedding you choose. If you are sharing the room, you and your roommate can even try to coordinate the bedding so that it the two sets complement each other.

Often in a dorm room you can afford to go with a louder and more vibrant bedding set, since the walls will always be the normal white or cream. This is a great opportunity to convey your own personal style and favorite colors with your bedding set. Just be sure that the bedding you get is the correct size for the dorm room, as some colleges only offer extra-long twin mission beds that will need extra-long sheets.

Organize with Style
When you live in such a small space, it’s especially important for you to be organized and make sure that everything has a proper place. However, you can certainly make your organization stylish. You should be able to find baskets and bins that reflect your style and what you like in décor. Baskets and bins will help you keep things organized and clean, and they’ll add some color and personality to the room as well. Look for all different shapes and sizes. You might want some to go on your desk, in your closet, on the floor, and under your bed.

Keep the Décor as Simple as Possible
When planning your décor, remember that your dorm room isn’t going to be that big. If you end up sharing the room, you’re going to have even less space. Don’t feel like you need to cover every inch of the walls or bring everything from home. Keep things as simple as possible. That way you won’t end up with an overcluttered room that ends up appearing smaller than it actually is.

Chances are, your dorm room is your first living space outside of your parents’ home, and decorating it should be fun. By infusing some of your personality into the décor, you’ll be able to better enjoy the area you’re living in, which is important as you’re going to be spending quite a bit of time there.
