You see it all the time in retail discount stores: Color coordinated decor for each room in your home. And some of the decorating themes are very pretty. In fact, some people become enthralled with them. They’re usually really cute, come in a variety of colors, shades, patterns and designs, and they just down right make decorating easy. There’s no guesswork – everything is coordinated for you from the start. But there’s also nothing unique. Your home should have more of you in its final design style. Just by mixing elements from different designs though, you can create something that’s just right for you, your home, and your decorating preferences. Here are a few tips to help get you started.

1. It’s ok to start with a cookie cutter decor look, pattern, or color scheme you’ve come across in a retail store. These are actually useful starting places for getting different color matching ideas.

2. Select just a few of your favorite items at the store that have the colors you want. For instance, let’s say you plan to decorate your bathroom in a sea green color theme. You’ll find a lot of really nice towel sets or a small area rug runner to make everything look as if it belongs together, so choose one you like. If you just can’t help yourself… give in and get the coordinated accents as well, such as the toothbrush holder and soap dish.

3. Now most likely the coordinated design of one accent piece you select has bits of other colors mixed in. It’s not unusual for instance, to see blues, tans, yellows and oranges in a sea green coordinated bathroom set, because these colors are found when you’re actually at the sea or ocean. So they go well together.

And this is a key decorating point: Your room colors don’t have to match perfectly. They should simply compliment each other. So in our sea themed bathroom decor example above, it would be just fine to add a set of solid tan colored towels, burnt orange wash cloths, and a southwestern area rug with touches of blue in it.

4. Experiment with different shades of color. If you’re using primarily green in the bathroom design, try both a light and dark shade. Test the colors out though, because sometimes one shade doesn’t sit well next to another. Sometimes you can tell this instinctively by holding two items of different shades together in the store, but other times you’ll need to actually buy the items and test them in the actual room itself. If anything doesn’t quite look or feel right in the overall room design can easily be returned to the store.

5. Use what you have. In the bathroom decorating example, using different shades of green won’t look to great if you have pink walls and aren’t able to add wall paper to them when you’re redecorating. If you have deep, dark wood cabinets and other accessories, the darker green shades might make the room seem a bit too heavy and dark once you have all of the new decorations in place.

Even if you find just one interesting or unique piece that really catches your attention – that’s a place to start. You can create an entire room’s unique design and decor style by simply working from the color and style of that one piece!

From stenciled drawings to wooden cows to ruffled curtains, country design has all the frills you might expect. When I was a little girl, my grandparents sold woodwork at the flea markets all over Tennessee and Kentucky. We had wooden calendars with dolls or bears painted on them. We had quilt racks with hearts. We had every crafty country decoration imaginable. Although I thought at one time that you could just toss all these things into a room and have style, I’ve learned since that there are very definite ways to create crafty country rooms that men are still willing to enter.

Crafty country is great, but if you are not careful, your husband may be ready to kick you out of the house. Country style decorating tends to be frilly and a bit girly, and your husband may not approve. One way to create a home that is comfortable for everyone is to use wooden flea market items and ruffled curtains sparingly. Not every room in your home needs to have a cow or duck in it. You can create a beautiful country sitting room with a comfortable plaid couch, slightly ruffled curtains, and a couple of stencils on the wall; the room is still definitely country, but at the same time your wooden coffee tables may have somewhat modern lines so that the males in your home enjoy the room too.

Another way to bring country design to the whole family is to let your husband add his own touches to the decoration. I’m not saying you should let him put antlers on every part of the walls, but if he hunts, you should allow him to have at least one or two rooms (maybe in the back of the house) where he can display his animals. If he doesn’t hunt, you could simulate the more manly country style by integrating rustic decor items such as an antler chandelier or floor lamp. Another option is to bring in old farming tools or hunting traps to display on the walls. This is an excellent way to help bring a touch of maleness into the house plus these old items generate great interest when guests are around. They can also give the room a settled, sturdy feeling; something about the tools makes a room seem safe and secure. Using a few of these tools or items throughout your home can really make your crafty country them come to life.
