Have You Heard of Female Condoms?

The female condom is a relatively recent and little known product that every woman (and man!) should include in her personal safe sex arsenal. Although less well known than the male condom, female condoms offer many advantages.

A lot of people have never heard of female condoms, and it is often difficult to find them at your local store. Planning ahead to purchase female condoms online is a good idea.

Constructed of strong polyurethane, the female condom has a soft ring on each end. The inner ring is inserted into the vagina and holds the condom in place. The outer ring holds the condom open on the outside to partially covers the labia. Because it covers a larger area, the female condom protect against STD’s better than the traditional male condom.

Even if you (or your partner) have been vaccinated for HPV and are using birth control pills, you should still use a condom every time you have sex, unless you are in a committed monogamous relationship or are intentionally trying to get pregnant. If your partner is not thrilled about having to stop and put on a condom every time you have sex, you can take control of your own body by using a female condom.

In addition to better disease prevention and giving the female partner greater control of her situation, female condoms have other advantages:

  • The thin polyurethane conducts heat well and many users say they provide greater sensitivity than latex condoms.
  • Many males prefer for their partner to use a female condom. The condom can be inserted ahead of time, or used spontaneously, so you can plan your evening better.
  • Since female condoms are made of polyurethane, latex allergies are not an issue.

Be adventurous and try something new. You and your partner might decide female condoms are the only way to go on the road to continued safe sex! If your local store does not stock them, try getting your condoms online (you can save money that way, too!).
