Easy Ways to Add Your Personality When Decorating
It’s easy to get so wrapped up into the latest styles or trends featured in design magazines that you forget to add some of your own personality when decorating your home. It’s nice to know you can step into any room in your home and see your own unique personality and style reflected there. Following are some ways you can add your own personality to the rooms in your home.
Focus on a Hobby or Collection of Yours
Do you have a favorite hobby or special collection? Consider using that when planning your décor. Collections of such things as dolls, airplanes, specific figurines, and hats can really personalize a room. Consider using one of these collections to create a focal point in the room—placing them on a fireplace mantel or even a large oak bookshelf. For those of you who like to knit or sew, you might display some of your favorite creations in the room: a quilt thrown on the back of the couch or an embroidered picture hung on the wall.
Use Family Photographs to Decorate
One of the best ways to infuse your décor with personality is to add family photographs into the mix. If you don’t want to use recent ones, then try displaying old black-and-white photos of some of your ancestors. For a more current touch, frame some of your favorite photos of yourself with your family and friends and hang those on the wall. This is a great way to establish a personal touch in a room, plus it also might serve to add some interest to a wall.
Use Your Favorite Colors to Decorate
When decorating a room, you first want to choose what colors you want to use and then go from there. Then when you go to pick out a fabric or décor item, you’ll be able to find them in the colors you’ve selected.
Do be sure, however, that the color you pick is practical, one you won’t get tired of within a few months. You’ll need to pick colors for the walls, trim, and furniture like your like your wood bedroom furniture or your dining room set. You can pick two or three of your favorites to have in the room, or go with different shades of your favorite color.

Whether you’re creative or not, you can still create a piece of art with which to personalize your décor. This might be a painting or photograph you take, or you might choose to display a collection of items. It can be any artistic outlet you choose. Adding your own artwork to a room creates your own sense of style and personality. Do be sure that you choose a medium that you like—not just one that’ll match your room’s décor.
